Here’s an inspiring story that once again proves how Men Will Be Men! Read how a 74-year-old man is making a living after retiring as an English Lecturer.
In a report by Times Now, a Bengaluru-based woman who was stranded in the middle of a highway shared how she an auto driver helped her. She was surprised when he spoke impeccable English.
Nikita Iyer was getting late for her office which was on the other end of the town. This is when she met Pataabi Raman, a 74-year-old auto driver, who stopped to help her. He told her,
Please come in Ma’am, you can pay what you want.
Nikita was surprised by the elderly man’s behaviour and curiously asked him how he spoke such good English. The duo chatted for next 45-minutes which were deeply enriching.
His Story
Raman who holds MA and M Ed. degree used to be an English lecturer. Post his retirement, he has been driving an auto-rickshaw since 14-years. He used to teach English at a college in Mumbai as he did not get a job in Karnataka.
He narrated how he faced rejection everytime he applied for a job in his home state and said,
The only question I was asked was, “What is your caste?” and when I said my name was Mr. Pataabi Raman, they said, “We will let you know.”
Fed up, he moved to Mumbai to look for a job and was welcomed and given a job in the reputed Powai college where he worked for 20 years. Later, Raman retired at 60 and returned to Karnataka.
Life After Retirement
Since Raman worked at a private institution, there was no pension post retirement. He said,
Teachers do not get paid well. The maximum you can earn is Rs 10,000-15,000 a month and since it was a private institution, I don’t have pension. By driving a rickshaw I get at least Rs 700-1500 a day which enough for me and my girlfriend.
When Nikita laughed along with him, he said,
She is my wife but I call her my girlfriend because you must always treat them as equal. The minute you say wife, husbands think she’s a slave who must serve you but she is in no way inferior to me, in fact she is superior to me sometimes. She is 72 and takes care of the house while I work for 9-10 hours a day.
We live in a 1 BHK in Kadugodi where my son helps pay the rent of Rs 12,000 but beyond that, we are not dependent on our children. They live their life and we live ours happily. Now I am the Raja of my road, I can take my auto out any time I want and work when I want.
