A 19-year-old Dalit woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras died at Safdarjung hospital in Delhi on Tuesday morning, days after she was allegedly raped by four upper-caste men.
The incident took place on September 14, while she was admitted on Monday to the Safdurjung Hospital in Delhi in an extremely critical condition with spinal injuries, paralysis and cuts in her tongue.The girl breathed her last at 3am on Tuesday morning.
All the four men alleged to be involved in the crime have been arrested and will now face charges under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, according to Hathras SP Vikrant Vir.
Background
On September 14, the young woman had gone to the fields with her mother and went missing thereafter. She was found later with severe injuries and her tongue cut as she bit it when the accused attempted to strangle her.
She was admitted to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital in Aligarh but her condition showed no signs of improvement and she was referred to Delhi. A spokesperson of the Aligarh hospital said her legs were completely paralysed and arms partially paralysed.
Official Police Statement
As outrage continues to build over the death of a 19-year-old Dalit woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras, the local police have now claimed that the deceased was not a victim of sexual assault.
As reported by India Today, UP Police has claimed that Hathras victim was attacked and allegedly strangulated by four accused which caused damage to her nervous system and left her paralysed.
Speaking to media, Hathras SP Vikrant Vir said that no signs of sexual assault were found on the victim’s body by doctors and reports of her tongue being cut were also false. He quoted:
No signs of sexual assault was confirmed by doctors in either Hathras or Aligarh. The matter will be probed by doctors through forensic help. No signs of abrasion were found on the victim’s private parts.
According to initial media reports, the victim bit her tongue as the accused tried to strangulate her after raping her. As a result, she had allegedly suffered deep cuts on her tongue. However, the police officer denied claims that the Hathras gangrape victim’s tongue was cut or that her backbone was shattered. He said,
The news of cutting of the victim’s tongue is completely wrong, we had recorded the statement of the victim. Also, there have been reports that her backbone was broken, it’s wrong. She was strangled and received injuries on her neckbone which led to all complications.
Reacting to allegations of lapses in the Hathras gangrape probe, the SP said,
On September 14, the victim’s family had complained of molestation and assault. She was sent to Aligarh where she became stable and she gave a statement accusing three more people and also alleged gangrape. An FIR was registered and all were arrested.
IG Aligarh Piyush Mordia also claimed that the Hathras victim’s family had only complained of physical assault and harassment initially and that no signs of rape were found.
On September 14, the victim’s brother filed a complaint that a man strangled and tried to murder his sister. The victim was then shifted to a hospital. She in her statement said that the man had also harassed her and made no other allegations.
Mordia also added,
On September 22, the victim named three other persons and made allegations of rape. The medical examination did not confirm rape.
The death of the Hathras gangrape victim could be turning out to be next Nirbhaya moment in India. As news of her death spread, protests broke out at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital as well as in Vijay Chowk and in Hathras and civil society activists and political leaders.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday said those responsible for the gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman shall not be spared. Adityanath further said prime minister Narendra Modi had spoken to him on the incident and asked for ‘strictest’ punishment against the accused. He tweeted,
Those responsible for the unfortunate incident with the girl in Hathras shall not be spared. A three-member special team has been formed to probe the case. It will submit its report in seven days. To ensure speedy justice, the case will be tried in a fast-track court.
In a subsequent tweet, UP CM quoted,
Honourable prime minister Narendra Modi has spoken to me on the incident and directed that strictest punishment be taken against the accused.
Hathras Police has also asked people on social media to refrain from spreading false rumours in the case.
